  2. Kokeshi dolls created by 12 schools of kokeshi artisans across Japan, primarily from Tsugaru, will be displayed and sold. Kokeshi dolls have long been popular as souvenirs for hot-spring resorts, and are currently enjoying a third wave of popularity. A large number of kokeshi dolls arranged in a modern style popular among young women will be displayed.

  2. The exhibition brings together works of Ibaraki Kumiko, a famous traditional craft from Ibaraki, with other examples of work created through mastery of traditional techniques. There is also a workshop where visitors can make a mini sliding door with an artisan.

     • See and touch the traditional techniques of Kumiko joinery and furniture production handed down from the mid-20th century to today.
     • The finest products from Ibaraki, created by both master and up-and-coming furniture and fixture artisans, will be on display.

  2. 400 years after its birth, new efforts are underway to apply this outstanding craftsmanship to modern manufacturing to fuse traditional crafts and design. There will be demonstrations of metal engraving and hands-on instruction by craftspeople as well as display and sales of their work.

• Sasebo Tops

  2. The Sasebo top is characterized by its round shape, bright colors, and the way it is spun upside-down, and the fact that it spins for a long time has made it a powerful victory talisman. There will be demonstrations of how to make colorful tops and how to spin them as well as sales of seasonal tops.

     • Make your own top and experience Japanese game culture by painting a Sasebo top, making a tree-shaped top, and painting a spinning top at the workshop.
     • Rediscover Japanese tops! Related manufacturing techniques will be presented in detail.
     • 40 types of "Tsukumo tops" and seasonal decorative tops will be displayed.
     • Different sizes of Sasebo tops, which children and adults alike can have fun spinning, will be sold, and visitors will be instructed how to spin them on the spot.
